What Size Penis Do Women Prefer? What the Research Actually Says
If there is one thing the research makes clear, it is this: there is no single penis size that women universally prefer. Some women care about size. Many care much less about it. And when size does matter, girth may matter more than length for some women. The idea that there is a magic penis size that produces better sex is not supported by the evidence.

What Is the Average Penis Size?
One of the strongest sources for average penis measurements is a systematic review published in BJU International. Researchers combined measurements from up to 15,521 men, with penis measurements taken by healthcare professionals using standardized procedures.
The average was: flaccid length 9.16 cm (3.61 in), erect length 13.12 cm (5.16 in), flaccid circumference 9.31 cm (3.67 in), and erect circumference 11.66 cm (4.59 in). Importantly, the erect measurements were based on fewer participants than the flaccid measurements, so the researchers noted this as a limitation.
That gives an important point of comparison when looking at studies of women's preferences.
So, What Size Do Women Actually Prefer?
One of the more interesting studies asked 75 women to choose from 33 three-dimensional models of erect penises rather than simply asking them to estimate a number. For a long-term partner, the average preferred model was approximately 16.0 cm (6.3 in) long and 12.2 cm (4.8 in) in circumference. For a one-time sexual partner, the preferred model was slightly larger: 16.3 cm (6.4 in) long and 12.7 cm (5.0 in) in circumference. The difference was small, particularly for length. The researchers described the preferred sizes as only slightly larger than average.
But there is an important catch: this was a study of 75 women, not a universal measurement of what women want. The participants were also sexually experienced California residents who were attracted to men, so the findings shouldn't be presented as representing all women everywhere.
Is Girth More Important Than Length?
There is some evidence pointing in that direction, but it isn't strong enough to say that all women prefer girth. An older survey of 50 sexually active female college students found that 45 of 50 participants said width was more important than length for sexual satisfaction. However, the study was very small and relied entirely on self-report, so it shouldn't be treated as definitive evidence. Another study involving 170 women found that only a minority considered penis length or girth important, and among those who did, girth tended to be considered more important than length.
So the more accurate conclusion is that when penis size matters to a woman, girth may be more important than length—but individual preferences vary considerably.
Does a Bigger Penis Mean Better Sex?
Not necessarily. This is where online discussions often go beyond the evidence. A 2023 literature review examined the available research on penis size and partner sexual satisfaction and concluded that the evidence remains incomplete, with many studies limited by small samples and methodological problems. The authors called for better research before drawing strong conclusions about penis size and partner satisfaction. In other words, "bigger is better" is not a scientific conclusion. Some women may prefer larger dimensions. Others may prefer average or smaller dimensions. Some may barely consider penis size when evaluating sexual satisfaction.
What About Vaginal Size?
This is where another common misconception appears. There isn't one simple "average vagina size" that can be directly compared with penis size. The vagina is an elastic, muscular structure, and researchers obtain different measurements depending on exactly what they measure and how they measure it.
For example, one MRI study of 28 women found an average undistended vaginal length of 6.27 cm, measured from the cervix to the introitus. The average width varied by location: proximal vagina 3.25 cm, middle region 2.78 cm, and introitus 2.62 cm. Other clinical studies report a mean total vaginal length of around 9.6 cm, illustrating why different studies can produce apparently different numbers depending on their measurement method and anatomical landmarks.
The numbers shouldn't be interpreted as a maximum capacity. The vagina changes shape and dimensions with arousal, movement, childbirth history, age, and other anatomical factors. One study specifically examining vaginal measurements and sexual function found that vaginal size did not predict sexual activity or sexual function.
Does Vaginal Size Explain Penis-Size Preferences?
Not very well. The vagina isn't simply a tube that needs to be "filled." Sexual sensation involves many structures, including the clitoris, vulva, vaginal walls, pelvic floor, and surrounding tissues. Individual anatomy and stimulation preferences also differ substantially. This is one reason why a simple equation such as "bigger penis equals more vaginal stimulation equals better sex" doesn't hold up scientifically.
What About Women Who Prefer Longer Penises?
There is some research suggesting that a subset of women may prefer greater length. One study of 323 women found that women who reported that a longer-than-average penis was important for their ability to orgasm during penile-vaginal intercourse also reported more frequent vaginal orgasms. However, the study was based on self-reported online data and did not establish that a longer penis causes more orgasms. The researchers themselves called for better-controlled research. That's an important distinction: preference is not the same thing as proof of better sexual function.
So, What Is the "Best" Penis Size?
There isn't one. The research suggests three things: average erect penis size is around 13.1 cm (5.2 in) in length and 11.7 cm (4.6 in) in circumference; some women prefer slightly larger than average, with some evidence that girth matters more than length for certain women; and penis size alone is not a reliable predictor of sexual satisfaction. The overall research remains too limited to make a universal claim.

If you're asking because you're worried that you're "too small," don't compare yourself with pornography or internet anecdotes. A penis around the population average is already considerably more common than the extremely large sizes frequently displayed online. And if you're wondering what women actually prefer, the honest answer is much less dramatic than social media makes it sound: there is a range of preferences—not a magic number. For many couples, sexual satisfaction depends on far more than penis dimensions.
