So... missionary or doggy?
Between these two, missionary has a practical advantage for many women because it can make external clitoral stimulation easier. But that doesn't mean missionary is "the female orgasm position." Doggy style can be someone's favorite and can absolutely lead to orgasm.
In online discussions, you'll find women saying all three things: missionary works best for them, doggy works best, or neither works without additional clitoral stimulation. That's not surprising. A U.S. probability sample found that women have very different preferences for the location, pressure, shape, and pattern of genital touch.
The bigger question: can she orgasm from penetration alone?
In a nationally representative U.S. sample of 1,055 women, 18.4% said intercourse alone was sufficient for orgasm. Another 36.6% said clitoral stimulation was necessary during intercourse, while another 36% said clitoral stimulation wasn't necessary but made their orgasms better.
That's probably the most important fact to know before comparing positions. If someone needs or strongly prefers clitoral stimulation, arguing over missionary vs. doggy misses the bigger issue.
Why can missionary work well?
Missionary gives you a few things that can be useful for orgasm. There's usually more opportunity for pelvic-to-pelvic contact, and it's relatively easy for either partner to add clitoral stimulation. It also allows the receiving partner to adjust their pelvis and movement rather than simply lying still.

Can missionary be modified to work better?
Absolutely. One research-backed example is the Coital Alignment Technique (CAT), a modified form of missionary designed to increase genital and clitoral contact through changes in body alignment and movement. An early study comparing women who learned the technique with a control group reported higher rates of coital orgasm and orgasm experienced as satisfying. The study was relatively small, so it shouldn't be treated as proof that CAT will work for everyone—but it provides a legitimate reason that a small change in missionary mechanics may matter.
The basic lesson is more useful than memorizing the name: change the angle. Change the movement. See what feels better.

For some women, yes. For others, not at all. And there are several reasons why.
